The History and Future of Punk Fashion

Punk emerged on the music scene between 1974 and 1976, and punk fashion soon followed. Most people involved in the punk scene were excited by the idea of rebellion and anarchy, so a lot of their clothing was anti-mainstream. A lot of people liked to get their clothes from thrift stores and sometimes even from trash cans – the dirtier, the better. They also loved to incorporate controversial or offensive slogans and symbols on their clothing.

Punk fashion soon rose to mainstream status with the help of designers, such as Vivienne Westwood. Her clothing was famously worn by some of the members of The Sex Pistols, who are credited as one of the bands that brought punk music to light for many people. Over the years punk music has changed and developed sub-genres; and so has the fashion. But there is nothing like the classic punk rocker look to me, it just screams individuality and confidence.

Some staples in punk clothing are studded belts, anarchy symbols, Mohawks and even tattoos. I am sure these will always be fashionable in the punk scene, so there is no question that the future of punk will love the same styles as people in the past have.

So, everyone says that the children are the future of the world, right? That means the children are the future of Punk! I honestly can’t wait to have kids (well I can wait, and probably will wait for a few years) that I can dress in alternative and punk clothing. Seriously, I think its so flipping adorable when I see babies with Mohawks and little studded belts. I admire the parents for loving their style so much that they pass it onto their children; my parents would have never dressed me up in whatever style they liked the time, and honestly I am glad they didn’t. I don’t know how well I would I would have looked dressed up like I was going to a hair metal concert, punk fashion would have looked great on me though. I was even born with a Mohawk and everything!

If you want to pass on the style of Punk Fashion to your little ones I have a few tips:

  • Get Creative – Don’t be afraid of what’s “in style” or what is fashionable at the time, and don’t let what other people think hold you back, originality and confidence is key. Mix and match bright colors, clash different patterns; any ideas you have, especially if they are part of a DIY outfit can become a rockin’ punk outfit. You can draw fake safety pins and studs on a black fabric jacket to make it look like a leather jacket.
  • Hair – This one is easy; you obviously won’t want to completely shave your baby’s head down to the skin, faux-hawks are a cute way to give your baby a punk hair style without cutting their hair too close to their soft scalps. (If you get lucky like my parents your baby may have already been born with a wild Mohawk!) Don’t dye your kids hair though, the chemicals are extremely dangerous for a baby, especially the fumes that come off of a lot of dyes.
  • Accessories – Studded belts, baby combat boots, and ties; all of these are great accessories that can be added to any outfit to pull off a punk rock look.

One thing you need to remember is that it is extremely important for your baby to be comfortable. Try buying 100% cotton one pieces and then add on accessories to complete the look. There are places online that sell awesome looking punk clothing for babies, but they are made out of cheap material that itches and discomforts the baby.

My Baby Rocks is not one of those places, our clothing is 100% cotton, comfortable, and durable (some items are even 100% certified organic cotton.) This site is a great option for anyone who has passed along punk blood to their little ones. I recommend browsing through the one pieces, and thinking about mixing and matching different colors and accessories together. You are bound to find that perfect punk rock outfit.
